What is hypnosis?Everyone goes in and out of natural hypnotic trances every day, without perhaps knowing it. Have you ever been so absorbed in a book or film that the hours seemed to fly by? Or been in a meeting where every minute seemed like an hour? Realised that someone was talking to you, but you were ’miles away’? All these are examples of ’common everyday trance’, which all of us can do. Hypnosis is no different, it is a state of awareness where you will not do or say anything that you do not want. Will I loose control in any way?No, you remain in control at all times. A hypnotherapist does not have any control over you. In fact, the state of hypnosis is in fact one of heightened awareness where it is possible for your mind to be aware of many more things than is possible in the conscious state. How many sessions will I need?Sessions are tailored to the individual client and their presenting problem, so this is usually something best discussed on an individual basis. The first session is one where we have a chance to meet and determine the best way to help you. Cognitive Hypnotherapy takes recent understandings of how the brain works, cognitive behavioural methods and a modern view of trance, to create a combination that can be very effective in a relatively short amount of time. Many problems can be helped in as little as 3-4 sessions.
How is your approach different to others?I work by combining two of the most clinically proven therapeutic techniques available, cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnosis. Drawing on recent discoveries and ideas from Evolutionary Psychology, Cognitive Theory, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Transactional Analysis I work to incorporate them into a modern idea of hypnosis to provide a framework for therapy. This is assimilated within the approaches of the most effective hypnotherapists of the last 50 years, including Milton Erickson, Gil Boyne, Stephen Wolinsky, Rubin Battino and Tad James.
